The One Where I Clean the Refrigerator ~ Homeschool Week Wrap-Up

This is our second week back to school, and it can be tough blending starting-school activities with end-of-summer activities.

The first part of the week was hot and sticky, good days to stay inside and hit the books. But by the end of the week, the temperatures and humidity had dropped, and the children were eager to play a little hooky. J

Monday, we were desperate for milk, so we ran to Sam’s Club. I use the word ran loosely since Sam’s is about a half-hour away and usually gets combined with other stops. School in the van!

I don’t remember Tuesday so well, perhaps because it was a normal day. So, I asked the 8yo what we did that day. Her answer? We had breakfast, did school, listened to Pride & Prejudice (the music CD), talked, ate lunch, napped. The melody of life.

Learning in the midst of a cute distraction.

A duet of giggles.

Wednesday was our library’s Summer Reading Program carnival…games, bags of candy, popsicles, and plenty of smiling librarians. I think the prospect of a fun afternoon at the library energized the children…we finished an entire day of lessons in the morning. J

Bible Bee study.

Bedtime reading.

Thursday is spelling test day, and the children are usually eager to get it done first thing in the morning. As I get the day going, they give each other their spelling tests. I often overhear, "I can’t tell you that. It's a test." J Overall, it was an off day, not really in any way I can put my finger on, but it did end with a rather productive evening working on the house and studying for the Bible Bee.

Spelling test.

My big accomplishment this week? In the midst of all this back-to-school flurry of activity, I cleaned out the refrigerator in the garage. J There was some yucky brown goo that had stuck all over the bottom shelf, so before I loaded the refrigerator up with milk again, I wiped it all out…all shelves, drawers, and door racks. Whew! What a chore. But now it looks like new, and I can cross an item off my it-really-needs-to-be-done-but-I’m-going-to-wait-until-I-can’t-put-it-off-any-longer list. How many items are on your list? J

Building our home this week…

We’ve received most of our kitchen cabinets! A couple were damaged, one was missing, and one was just plain wrong, but those re-orders should be delivered this weekend. I still need to figure out countertops, but who’s keeping track of what’s left? {Probably none of you, but I sure am. J}

We would love to be in by the end of August since we have a rather busy fall coming up. But only God knows. We covet your prayers for that timely completion and the sale of our current house!

Have an amazing weekend! J
