Our Favorite St. Patrick’s Day Recipes ~ Easy Irish Soda Bread and Green Punch

There are so many reasons to love St. Patrick’s Day.

Call me shallow if you want, but my favorite color is green. Any day that celebrates with wearing of green must be good. J

St. Patrick’s Day can also herald one last hurrah of winter or the coming of spring, whichever season you prefer.

Most importantly, St. Patrick’s Day has a terrific Christian origin. I particularly like Patrick’s use of the shamrock to illustrate the trinity. 

It’s also a good day to fix a little something special. Our main dish varies, but we usually have Easy Irish Soda Bread and Green Punch. I found these recipes originally on, but I’ve altered them a bit to our taste.

Easy Irish Soda Bread

4 cups flour
4 tablespoons white sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup butter, softened
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg
¼ cup butter, melted
¼ cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a cookie sheet.

In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and butter. 

Stir in 1 cup of buttermilk and egg. 

Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and knead slightly. {Only slightly. Yippee!} 

Form dough into a round and place on the baking sheet/stone. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter with ¼ cup buttermilk. {This is usually way too much and can be cut down.} Brush this on the loaf. Use a sharp knife to cut an X into the top of the loaf. {A cross! J}

Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. If you’d like, continue to brush the loaf with the butter mixture while it bakes. 

NOTE: If you bake the loaf on a flat sheet, you run the risk of melting butter running off the sheet, dripping onto the bottom of your oven and burning, filling your house with smoke, and then you eat your bread with an acrid smell. You may want to consider baking in a 9x13. Don’t ask me how I know. L

Green Punch

1 {3 ounce} package of lime gelatin
2 cups hot water
½ can pineapple juice
1 can frozen orange juice concentrate, partially thawed
1 cup white sugar {I usually cut this down.}
2 ¼ cups cold water
1 liter ginger ale

In a large saucepan, dissolve the gelatin in the 2 cups of hot water. Allow to cool.

When gelatin is cool, pour into a large punch bowl. Stir in the pineapple juice, orange juice concentrate, sugar, and 2 ¼ cups cold water. Pour in ginger ale when ready to serve.

  1. Look forward to trying these -- never can have too many punch recipes & l.o.v.e. that the soda bread doesn't have raisins in it!!! Whoo Hoo!!!

    1. I've never heard of soda bread with raisins...but I'm glad they aren't in there, too, Kari! :-) Enjoy!

    2. Isn't that funny?! Every recipe I've ever seen, has raisins, except yours. So glad! I think most folks make the soda bread into hot cross buns, hence the raisins? Who knows. I've copied both recipes to try, hopefully, next week.
