Huzzah! for Indiana’s Home Education Week ~ Homeschool Week Wrap-Up

Indiana’s Governor Mike Pence declared this week as Home Education Week.

Huzzah! J

Whereas, children represent the future of the State and require protection and nurturing in order to develop into well-adjusted citizens of the state; and
Whereas, Indiana has a long and established history of promoting diverse and progressive methods of education, and has long recognized that a child’s development is best fostered when that child’s education is directed via private parental choice; and
Whereas, Indiana also recognizes that parents have a fundamental right to direct their children’s education, and has statutorily authorized home education as a legitimate method of education, and
Whereas, studies indicate that home education results in well-rounded, socially-adjusted, and productive members of society, and that home-educated children are generally fully-equipped to face the technical challenges of the modern workforce and the complexities of a heterogeneous society; and
Whereas, the citizens of Indiana commend home education’s important role in the development of a diverse, well-educated citizenry;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Michael R. Pence, Governor of the State of Indiana, do hereby proclaim February 23-March 1, 2014, as INDIANA HOME EDUCATION WEEK in the State of Indiana, and invite all citizens to duly note this occasion.

Thanks to Indiana Association of Home Educators for sharing the proclamation

Child by child this week…

The 14yo ~

Organization is so crucial to a successful education. Sometimes motivation comes in something as simple as color-coordinated supplies. J

The 12yo ~
Math has grown beyond pencil and paper for my second-born. She’s learning how to use a protractor and compass and bringing back many difficult memories for me. No matter what she thinks, protractors were invented by the time I was in school! J

The 10yo~
The 10yo started one of our new favorite games. His penmanship lesson required that he write a “Who am I?” riddle. This quickly morphed into a friendly competition among the three Bigs which we riddled during lunch preparation, lunch munching, lunch clean-up, in and around spelling words…. J

I was the 15th president. Who am I? {James Buchanan}
I invented the wireless telegraph. Who am I? {Marconi}
I invented the mechanical reaper. Who am I? {Cyrus McCormick}

I was amazed at how much they knew and by how fierce the competition became!

The 8yo ~

Ever since completing Hooked on Phonics a couple of months ago, she has been completely unable not to read. Does that make sense? She’s reading everything – cereal boxes, my blog post titles, the labels on her bear clothes. This week, she’s especially enjoying this well-loved book of nursery rhymes, reading them out loud to anyone who will listen.

The 5yo ~

You know, why not? J

The 3yo ~

One early morning as we snuggled in bed, the 3yo asked over and over as he pointed at a book, “Wha color dis?” J

On the blog this week…

I’m reading…

Hollywood, Texas by Kathleen Y’Barbo. It’s a wonderful novella, easy to read with compelling characters. I’ll be writing a full review next week.

Our home-building this week…

BRICK!! Woo-hoo!! The exterior is almost done. I love the look of a brick house and wanted full brick, but the price was way too high to fit in our budget. Still, though, I think I’m going to love our end result…as soon as the temperatures rise a bit and the bricklayers can return to finish what they started.

On the inside, work is completed and inspector-approved on the oh-so-important part that is hidden in the walls: electrical, plumbing, and HVAC. Insulation is going in and inspection will hopefully be next week.

More snow coming our way this weekend. Huzzah!

Prayers for an amazing weekend! J
